We’re taking a closer look at the Zenith El Primero Chronomaster. Is it the best chronograph on the market today?

As usual in this video series, we’re zooming in on one specific watch model. Today, we’re looking at the Zenith El Primero Chronomaster ref. 03.2150.400. If you’ve already watched a few of our other videos or read some of my articles, you probably know that I’m not a huge fan of chronographs. I don’t know if I’m missing the racing spirit or if I just haven’t found the right chronograph yet. While the Monaco and Speedmaster are undoubtedly attractive iconic timepieces with fascinating histories, I can’t quite see any practical use for a chronograph in my daily life. Most have busy dials, asymmetrical designs, and relatively large cases. That all changed when I received a package containing the Zenith El Primero.

This is probably the first chronograph that has ever made me want to take off my current watch immediately. The El Primero Chronomaster ticks a lot of the boxes I’d expect from a solid chronograph. In line with the current retro trend, Zenith has based the design of this watch on the original model from 1969. At 38 mm, it is a perfect size, in my opinion. The colorful hands and subdials contribute to its retro flair but also manage to come across as a lively, modern touch that is easy on the eyes. Moreover, the automatic El Primero 400 caliber is unarguably one of the most historic and sophisticated chronograph movements on the market. It beats at 36,000 vph, has a 50-hour power reserve, and can be viewed through the display case back. If I haven’t already convinced you that this watch is worthwhile, I urge you to watch my entire video review.

What do you think? Do you prefer this watch over the Speedmaster, Monaco, and other iconic chronographs?
